CHILD WHO HAS DOWN SYNDROME

Child WHO HAS Down syndrome

Lifecast Body Simulation, a leader in realistic training manikins, announces the release of the world’s first Child who has Down Syndrome training manikin. This realistic manikin was formed from a real-life 3D body scan of a seven (7) year old girl who has Down syndrome named Gwen and will be available to healthcare education facilities around the world to facilitate specialty and inclusive training in managing Down syndrome.

Down syndrome (also called Trisomy 21) is a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in extra genetic material from chromosome 21. While varied amongst patients, a few common physical traits of some children who have Down syndrome are low muscle tone, a difficult airway for intubation, smaller stature, gapping in the toes, almond-shaped eyes, a single deep crease across the center of the palm, smaller hands and feet – all of which are accurately represented in the Gwen training manikin.

Gwen was created by Lifecast Body Simulation and the University of Greenwich in London who also received support from the Down Syndrome Association. Gwen and her family are truly supporting such a worthy cause in creating awareness of Down syndrome and giving healthcare providers an accurate means of training while continuing to support diversity and inclusion in simulation-based education and training.

“Gwen is the world’s first truly inclusive manikin. Our goal is to make manikins that look like real people. We worked with the University of Greenwich in the UK to create this manikin lifecast and 3D scan of Gwen, a 7 year-old girl who has Down Syndrome who lives in the UK with her dad, mum and brother.” says David Halliwell, Founding Director of Lifecast Body Simulation Ltd.

Latest news from The Down's Syndrome Association "Earlier this year we were approached by a team of medical manikin manufacturers based at Elstree Studios in North London who were seeking to develop a medical manikin which adequately reflects a child who has Down’s syndrome. They asked our help to find a model for the manikin…they were looking for a child of around six or seven years old. We were very pleased to help out by sharing their message on our closed Facebook groups. The team were inundated with respondents and the process of creating the manikin began in March. Yesterday, Gwen Manikin was launched at the Association of Simulation practice in Healthcare congress… and is already creating quite a stir ! Gwen Manikin was modelled on Gwen, who is now 8 years old. Gwen is an active, joyful and chatty young girl who is at mainstream school and who knows her own mind. Gwen has experienced some complex health issues during her life, so when her parents saw the post on our Facebook group, they realised how important the project was. Having talked about it with Gwen, they put her forward and she was selected for the project. It’s not easy being turned into a medical manikin…Gwen was scanned and had casts taken of her hands and feet. Gwen was brilliant throughout and the team were excellent at explaining the process to her. We’ll hope to share more of Gwen’s story in the next issue of our Journal. MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT The team’s aim is to ensure that all healthcare practitioners are adequately trained using a manikin which absolutely reflects a child who has Down’s syndrome. This is achieved using 3D scanning. Presently there are no manikins of this type anywhere in the world. The manikin team at Elstree are headed up by U.K. clinical practitioners and medical educators, but also includes movie makers who have built incredible models for Disney and National Geographic Channels.
